The Chattri Indian War Memorial

The Chattri Looking Out Copyright Chris Shoebridge.jpg

This memorial, which can only be reached on foot, is the site of the funeral pyre for the Hindu and Sikh soldiers who died in Brighton’s hospitals during the Great War. At that time, 12,000 Indian soldiers who had been wounded on the Western Front were hospitalised in the town. The Chattri is an impressive monument in a peaceful location overlooking the sea where the soldiers’ ashes were scattered.
