Uppark House
A National Trust property where the mother of HG Wells worked as a housekeeper, and where the author as a young man spent his time star-gazing from the rooftop. Uppark's Georgian interiors illustrate the comfort of life ‘upstairs’, in contrast with the ‘downstairs’ world of the servants. One highlight is the views; another is that there are bats nesting here! Sadly, the exquisite Vandalian Tower – a folly built to celebrate the founding of the short-lived British colony of Vandalia – which is in the grounds cannot be visited, but it can be seen from the South Downs Way.
