Old Winchester Hill

Old Winchester Hill has bronze age burial mounds standing prominently at its crest, and was later used as a hillfort by a Celtic chieftain. It is possible to still see the defensive bank and ditch, and within them the hollows where ancient huts once stood.

From here, as you would expect, there are spectacular views and Old Winchester Hill became a famous beauty spot for Victorians. It continues to attract walkers and artists, especially at sunrise and sunset, as well as those in need of a spiritual lift — a ley line is said to run through its summit, to the tumuli on Beacon Hill and on to Winchester Cathedral.
