The Long Man of Wilmington

Long Man Horse Rider Copyright Chris Shoebridge.jpg

The Long Man is a 230-feet giant on the hillside above the village of Wilmington. His age and identity remain unknown although there are speculations that he is the Anglo Saxon God Woden, the Norse mythological god Baldur, or a local haymaker. No one even knows what he is holding. Whoever he is, he is magnificent.

(And while you’re at Wilmington, look out for the 1,600-year-old yew in the churchyard, the Priory and beside it, the enclosure once used for holding stray animals.)
