Alciston

Alciston boasts a fourteenth century church, a renovated but still delightfully crumbly dovecote and a huge tithe barn, to which tenants were required to bring a proportion of their produce for the benefit of their landlords, the monks at Battle Abbey. A walk around this village is like taking a step back in time. If you visit on Good Friday, you will find the road through this village is closed for its annual skipping contest – a Sussex tradition that has died out elsewhere.
